Exeter Golf & Country Club is one of the most prestigious membership clubs in the South West of England.
The statistics are impressive:
When newly appointed General Manager Martin Halse, the Board of Directors and the management team produced a five-year strategic ‘route map’ for the organisation it was identified that it was time to review the club’s HR and Health & Safety policies.
Amarisk was appointed in the late summer of 2007 to undertake a complete review and to provide the management team with support, advice and training to put everything in place. The approach taken was to ensure the managers had the knowledge and confidence to deal with all safety and employment issues.
This included production of new contracts of employment and training on recruitment and selection, employment law, appraisal skills and those vital leadership and management competencies such as time management and assertiveness.
On the safety side, a full review was carried out of the site’s systems, a Health & Safety Committee was set up and managers were supported in a range of H&S skills such as risk assessment and manual handling.
Amarisk’s specialists visit the site monthly to support the team and EGCC also has outsourced support for advice on staffing and safety issues.
Martin said: “The club is a special kind of business with many longstanding staff members and, of course, the safety and comfort of our members is paramount. We were determined to employ a company who were prepared to roll their sleeves up and practically become part of the team here. The working relationship is the most important thing for us.
“Our employment and safety systems are now spot on and we have benefitted from a range of training courses, delivered by the same specialists. This meant they knew exactly what we needed and delivered it.”
