Employment of Unskilled Non-EU Workers
Thu 14th Aug 2008
There has been a big increase in the number of companies prosecuted for hiring illegal immigrants, it emerged earlier this month. A total of 137 were caught employing staff illegally in March and April, ten times the number prosecuted in the whole of last year, the BBC reported. And fines of approximately £500,00 have been handed out as a result. Immigration Minister, Liam Byrne, said the action was part of a new crackdown on the problem. He said ‘there are dodgy employers out there who are trying to undercut competitors and drive down British wages by employing people illegally’. Bosses face fines of up to £10,000 for each illegal migrant they employ.
