The right to request flexible working is likely to be extended to around 4.5 million parents of children up to the age of 16. Under the current rules the opportunity is limited to parents whose children are under six or disabled.
The decision follows the recommendations of an independent review undertaken on behalf of the Government, which found that over 90% of current applications for flexible working are agreed to by employers.
The Government has announced consultation on the proposal and will also consider ways of simplifying the process for employers.
